A benefit concert for Maui fire relief efforts raised nearly $1 million in donations in the 24 hours after the broadcast.

“Maui Ola: A Benefit Concert for Maui,” was held at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu on Aug. 20, with 100 percent of all $20 ticket sales evenly distributed among Maui United Way, Hawai’i Community Foundation, Hawai’i People’s Fund and the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement.

“It was overwhelming to see so many come together to support Maui,” Maui Kumu Hula Hokulani Holt-Padilla said in a news release Tuesday. “We in the hula community have a particular kuleana to ground our expressions in our sense of place and community. Maui Ola became an opportunity to amplify what we hold dear as a means of supporting our families in need.”

The event was broadcast online and across numerous local TV and radio stations.

Artists included Kolohe Kai, Hawaiian Style Band, Pure Heart, Jerry Santos, Raiatea Helm, Paula Fuga, Kimie Miner, Anuhea, Del Beazley, the Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra, Napua Silva, Kamaka Kukona, Po’okela Wood, Dane Fujiwara, Puamana, Pa’ahana, the Farden ‘ohana, more than 20 kumu hula from Maui and Oahu and more than 100 hula practitioners.

The concert will remain available on mele.com and social media platforms. For more information, visit mauiola.org.
